Coaching Philosophy
Insignia Health's Coaching For Activation™ program, designed to support the work of health coaches, helps individuals become more successful in managing their health as they improve their self-management abilities. The Coaching for Activation program is guided by six key principles:
Kick start behaviors. Rather than wait for motivation to develop (e.g., those who are 'not ready'), opportunities are sought, however small, to help individuals develop greater self-efficacy
Start where the individual is. Behaviors are pursued that are realistic and achievable given an individual’s current level of activation. These behaviors change opportunities are illuminated by a wealth of empirically-based insights into self-care behaviors, and the attitudes, values, motivations, and emotional disposition that drive these behaviors
Connect survey responses to the individual’s life. Responses to individual PAM survey questions help coaches quickly develop rapport and engage in meaningful and reflective dialog
Individual takes ownership. The individual chooses the behaviors to address. The health coach guides the individual with suggestions for appropriate goals and action steps that are consistent with their current level of activation
Support outside of coaching interactions. Self-care resources are provided as appropriate in support of each goal and action step
Feedback on progress. Follow-up PAM testing assesses changes in activation and behaviors, and offers formative assessment of program effectiveness |
Program Components
Integrating the PAM assessment and a wealth of behavior and behavior driver empirical insights into a coaching program is achieved through three core elements:
Training
Coaches are trained to administer the PAM survey, interpret and leverage the survey results, and to use Coaching for Activation guidance in conjunction with other coaching strategies. More than a dozen organizations have been trained in the Coaching for Activation approach, including Kaiser Permanente, Johns Hopkins Healthcare, State of Washington Medicaid, ODS Companies, and American Health Holdings. Insights gained from these organizations has further strengthened the Coaching for Activation model.
Survey System
Through Insignia's online survey system, a coach can administer the PAM tool and other survey modules, quickly view an individual's score, health status and specific item responses, and chronicle changes in activation over time. Individual question responses support coach-participant collaboration and help a coach engage individuals in self-reflection and bring focus to behavior change opportunities.
Coaching for Activation Guidance
In this web-based program, behavioral goals and related action step suggestions are tailored to an individual's health status and level of activation. With this approach, coaching can quickly focus on realistic behavior change opportunities and carefully build upon an individual's self-management competency Goals and steps are reinforced with self-care resources suitable for easy distribution for an individual's action plan. |
