Association of Neighborhood Characteristics and Social Interactions with Physical Activity, Diet, and Obesity Among Employed Adults

Authors: Roblin DW & Joski PJ, Center for Health Research / Southeast, Kaiser Permanente Georgia. Becker ER, Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University

Objective: Study sought to better understand the association of activation with health and the practice of healthy behaviors, including the role of neighborhoods in the promotion of health.

Study Design: This study involved 2,224 members of a managed care organization (MCO), aged 25-59, employed by large public or private corporations in the Atlanta area. Three condition cohorts were sampled -- adults with type 2 diabetes, adults with elevated lipids without CAD history, and low risk adults with no identifiable major morbidities. Survey measures used included.

Key Findings:

  • Across each condition cohort, higher activation correlates with higher levels of exercise
  • Higher levels of activation were associated with better diet (lower fat intake, higher daily servings of fruits and vegetables)
  • Activation particularly influences the practice of moderate exercise and physical function among adults with diabetes or elevated lipids
