Bill Mahoney, PhD, PAM co-inventor

Dr. Mahoney is a recognized leader in the measurement and evaluation of consumer health behavior. He has developed or co-developed leading measurement instruments including the Patient Activation Measure, the Care Transition Measure, the Team Development Measure, the Ambulatory Medication Safety Culture Measure as well as measures of subclinical depression, physical function, workforce engagement, hospital and clinic patient-centered care.

Dr. Mahoney has spent more than three decades researching consumer behavior, as both a sociologist and health researcher, with particular emphasis on research design and statistical analysis. As a professor of sociology, Bill taught and conducted research for more than 20 years at the Western Washington University before shifting his interests to healthcare and the application of latent variable models and stochastic measurement models. Most recently, Bill served as Director of Survey Research & Development for PeaceHealth, an integrated health system serving communities in Alaska, Washington and Oregon.

Dr. Mahoney’s research interests include consumer health activation, patient centered care, team development, health and aging and the use of personal health records. Bill serves on the review boards of Medical Care and the Journal of General Internal Medicine and has authored extensively with his work appearing in Health Services Research, Health Affairs, Medical Care, American Journal of Human Biology, and the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
